To read data from the CAN bus, the CAN interface must be enabled. When connecting to a CAN bus for the first time, it is also recommended to use Passive mode.
All required settings are configured on the CAN Bus tab in the device configuration.
¶ Description
- Connect the device to the CAN bus, open CAN Spy, and make sure the Baudrate has been detected.
Decoding files can be selected both in live CAN mode and in Log player mode.

Open the Parsing by decode file tab.
At the top of the tab, you will find the list of available decoding files. A file name filter is located to the left of the list.
Below the file list is a table showing all parameters that can be decoded by the selected file:
- Dark highlighted parameters are successfully decoded using the current CAN data.
The Value column displays the decoded parameter value. - Gray highlighted parameters cannot be decoded using the current CAN data.
- Dark highlighted parameters are successfully decoded using the current CAN data.
¶ Example
The animation below demonstrates how to select a decoding file using a log recorded from a KIA CEED:
- Enter "kia" in the filter to display only files for KIA vehicles.
- Browse the available files by scrolling the list or selecting them with the mouse.
- As you switch between files, you can compare the set of supported parameters. The example also shows incorrect vehicle mileage decoding when using the KIA OPTIMA file, followed by the correct decoding after selecting the KIA CEED file.
¶ Recommendations
CAN Spy allows you to test decoding files without uploading them to the device. This significantly reduces the time required to find the correct decoding file and verify the values that will be received during normal operation.
Always verify the decoded values against the vehicle dashboard and other factory-installed indicators.
Since decoding files can also be tested in Log player mode, there is no need to keep the vehicle available while selecting the correct file. Record a CAN log (see the CAN Bus Logging article), disconnect the vehicle, select the appropriate decoding file later, and then upload it to the device remotely (see the Remote Connection article).
